Exact scoped meaning

For the Gecko Y-series and in.xe systems covered by Gecko Alliance Troubleshooting Guide 9919-101313-D (Rev. 15, July 2023), the FLO message means:

The system has detected no water flow during the main pump’s operation.

That definition is limited to the controller families named in that guide, including in.ye / Y-series and in.xe, with related packs such as in.yt and in.yj appearing in the same FLO section. It does not automatically apply to every Gecko product, and it is not the same message as Jacuzzi FL1 or Sundance FL1.

The cited guide notes that error codes and water temperature may display alternately on LCD and LED keypads. Color keypads may need the matching techbook for message details.

Scope warning

Use this page only if:

  • your spa pack is a Gecko system in the Y-series / in.ye or in.xe families (or another family explicitly covered by that same FLO section), and
  • your keypad shows FLO as described in that guide.

Do not apply this page to Balboa codes, Jacuzzi FL1, Sundance FL1, or other Gecko lines outside that guide (including discontinued in.xm / in.therm material) unless your official documentation matches.

Confirm the controller family from the spa pack label using the identification method your spa maker or Gecko documentation provides, without opening the control box. If you cannot identify the pack without opening an electrical enclosure, stop and call a technician.

What the code can indicate

In the cited guide, FLO means the controller did not detect flow while the main pump should be running. That is a diagnostic message, not proof that the pump, heater, or pack has failed.

Situations the FLO section addresses include:

  • closed water-circulation valves
  • water level too low
  • a blocked filter
  • air trapped in plumbing (pumps may make abnormal sounds)
  • the pump linked to the heater not running
  • later technician items such as dealer-menu configuration, probe or in.flo cable issues, or heater/control replacement

The FLO section also states a minimum flow requirement for the system. That figure is a controller specification in the guide, not a homeowner measurement target. Do not try to measure flow rate yourself.

Safe owner-level checks

Stay with checks the Gecko FLO section lists that a homeowner can do without opening the control box or using dealer menus. These checks are not guaranteed fixes.

  1. Confirm owner-accessible circulation valves are open and the water level is high enough for your spa’s suction and filter design.
  2. Verify nothing is blocking the filter. Clean or replace the filter if it is restricted.
  3. Listen and look for circulation. Check whether the pump linked to heating (main pump, per the guide) appears to be running and moving water. Do not open electrical enclosures to inspect the pump.
  4. Watch for signs of trapped air. Abnormal pump sounds can indicate air in the plumbing. If your spa maker’s owner instructions include an owner-level priming or air-removal procedure, follow that document. If air clearing would require opening pressurized unions or other plumbing you are not trained to handle, stop and call a technician.
  5. Do not enter dealer menus or change HP / low-level configuration. Those steps are for trained service using Gecko startup documentation.

What not to do

Do not open the control box. Do not inspect, disconnect, or reconnect wiring or in.flo cables. Do not adjust a pressure switch. Do not jumper or bypass flow detection. Do not measure flow, voltage, or resistance. Do not replace the heater, pump, or control pack based only on FLO. Do not follow third-party video “fixes” that conflict with Gecko’s guide. Do not keep resetting power if protection devices trip.

When to stop and call a technician

Call a qualified spa technician familiar with Gecko systems if:

  • FLO returns after the safe owner checks above
  • you need dealer-menu configuration, cable checks, heater or control diagnosis, or any electrical test
  • a GFCI or breaker trips, will not reset, or trips again after one reset
  • you smell burning, see scorching, damaged wiring, or leaks near electrical equipment
  • you cannot identify whether your pack is in.ye / Y-series, in.xe, or another family without opening an electrical enclosure
  • anyone proposes bypassing flow detection

How to confirm the code in the owner’s manual

  1. Identify the Gecko spa pack family (for example in.ye or in.xe) from the product label without opening the control box.
  2. Open Gecko’s Y Series / in.xe troubleshooting guide (or your spa brand’s manual that reprints the same FLO definition).
  3. Find the FLO error message section and match the keypad text.
  4. Use only the owner-safe checks that apply to your installation.
  5. Leave dealer-menu, probe, cable, heater, and control replacement steps to trained service.
